Makoviy: Forgotten Traditions and Culinary Heritage

On July 26, a unique event dedicated to the folk traditions of celebrating Makoviy will take place at the open-air museum. Everyone is welcome to participate in the interactive lecture, where they will learn about the ways our ancestors used poppy and honey, as well as immerse themselves in the world of ancient culinary magic.

“You are in for a journey into the past, where poppy protected against evil forces, and honey was not only a delicacy but also currency, medicine, and… a reason for disputes during fasting,” the museum promises.

During the lecture, guests will discover what dishes with poppy were prepared by Ukrainians, why some residents of Kyiv consumed up to 9 kg of poppy per year in the 18th century, and how poppy was used for protection against evil spirits and in folk medicine. Visitors will also learn how much honey cost in ancient times, why it was allowed to be eaten during fasting, which prominent Ukrainian writers enjoyed cakes with honey and poppy, and which villages existed solely due to beekeeping.

Workshops, Recipes, and a Creative Atmosphere

Participants of the event will have the opportunity to create their own protective poppy bouquet and record ancient recipes for honey cookies from the 18th century and potatoes with poppy, which were prepared by our great-grandmothers.
