A court in Kyiv has sentenced a man who exploited a passenger’s helplessness on public transport, stole from him, and took out a loan in someone else’s name. The offender was sentenced to 5 years and 2 months in prison.

Circumstances of the Crime on the Capital’s Bus

As established by law enforcement, the thief noticed during the bus ride that one of the passengers had fallen asleep. He approached the man and discreetly stole several valuable items from his bag: a mobile phone, a Ukrainian citizen’s passport, and the taxpayer identification number.

The stolen information was used by the criminal for his own benefit. Using the victim’s personal documents, he took out a loan for over 26 thousand hryvnias. Despite attempts to conceal the crime, law enforcement quickly identified the thief, arrested him, and referred the case to court.

Court Ruling and Punishment for the Offender

After reviewing the collected evidence, the Kyiv court found the man guilty of theft and fraudulent actions using personal data. According to the verdict, the criminal will spend 5 years and 2 months behind bars.
