A series of unique surgeries for children with severe craniofacial defects has begun at the capital’s ‘Okhmatdyt’ hospital. This event is part of international medical cooperation.
French Surgeon’s Involvement in Treating Ukrainian Children
One of France’s most renowned pediatric maxillofacial surgeons, Romain Honsari, has arrived in Ukraine. He represents the prestigious Parisian clinic Necker-Enfants Malades and serves as a professor at the medical faculty of Paris University. This visit marks the fourth since the signing of a memorandum on international partnership involving the First Lady of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health.
The goal of the collaboration is to assist Ukrainian children with rare anomalies and to transfer European expertise to Ukrainian medical professionals. The French specialist is working alongside a team of Ukrainian neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating room nurses, and instructors from the National Medical University named after Alexander Bohomolets.
Initial Results and Future Prospects
Recently, a highly complex surgery was successfully performed at ‘Okhmatdyt’ on the first of four planned patients. A four-year-old girl has already undergone two surgical interventions that helped preserve her vision and enabled her to walk and speak. Despite significant progress, she still faces a long road to recovery.
“This is not just a fight for life, but for the opportunity for children to develop, breathe, see, speak, and be accepted in society,” it is noted on the Facebook page of ‘Okhmatdyt’.
Three more complex surgeries are ahead for the young patients, the next being a child with an extremely complicated pathology. Thanks to international cooperation and the professionalism of the doctors, these children are given a chance for a full life and social integration.
