Sikorski: Hungary Blocks Sanctions and Negotiations on Ukraine in the EU

«Це все одно, що говорити до стіни» – Сікорський про політику Угорщини

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski expressed his concern regarding Hungary’s position, which continues to block important decisions of the European Union. In particular, this concerns the 17th sanctions package, the opening of the first cluster for negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership, as well as the allocation of funds from the European Peace Facility to partially reimburse the costs of weapons that EU countries provide to Ukraine.

Sikorski’s Comments on Hungary

During the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Sikorski noted:

“There is one country – Hungary – that does not have the moral clarity that we have due to the attacks carried out by Putin”

. He emphasized that he reiterated his call for Hungary to lift its veto on the allocation of funds and to stop blocking the negotiation process, but noted that this is

“like talking to a wall”

.

Hopes for a U.S. Response

In addition, Sikorski expressed hope that the United States would respond appropriately to the recent missile attacks by Russia on Sumy. The minister noted that the U.S. has already taken a number of measures to persuade Kremlin leader Putin to stop the war, but

“the U.S. will not wait forever”

for Russia to agree to a ceasefire. Sikorski reminded that the U.S. Secretary of State clearly stated during the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting that the U.S. would not wait for a long-term compromise while Putin does not make the appropriate decisions.

It is worth noting that Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, regularly demonstrates its accommodating approach to the Kremlin regime. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Budapest has made statements that contradict the overall EU course of supporting Ukraine.
