The European Union advocates for continued pressure on the Russian Federation, considering it a key path to a just peace for Ukraine. This position was confirmed by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“Today, EU foreign ministers expressed support for the steps taken by the United States that will lead to a just peace. Meanwhile, we are working to strengthen sanctions against Russia, enhance military support for Ukraine, and bolster support for Ukraine’s budgetary needs and its EU accession process. Transatlantic unity, support for Ukraine, and pressure on Russia are how we will end this war and prevent future Russian aggression in Europe,” emphasized the head of European diplomacy.
US Plans and Ukraine’s Reaction
On August 8, US President Donald Trump announced preparations for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska. The goal of the negotiations is said to be reaching a peace agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Trump also suggested that a compromise might involve “territorial exchanges.”
Russia’s Position and Kyiv’s Response
According to The Wall Street Journal, Putin stated in a conversation with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, that he would agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws its troops from the entire Donetsk region. At the same time, The Washington Post reports, citing an informed source, that Putin has no intention of relinquishing the territories seized by Russia in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
In turn, President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine will not agree to concessions regarding its territorial integrity and will not cede its lands to the Russian Federation.
