The two-decade legal battle to preserve the historical space in the center of Kyiv has concluded with a final decision from the Supreme Court of Ukraine.

The Supreme Court Returned the Land to the Community of Kyiv

The Supreme Court of Ukraine has made a final ruling, officially returning the land located at 96-A Zhylianska Street to the territorial community of Kyiv. This area is part of the Museum of Prominent Figures of Ukrainian Culture, dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka, Mykola Lysenko, Panas Saksahansky, and Mykhailo Starytsky. The court’s verdict prevents the construction of a multi-story building on this historic site.

“On July 16, the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court of Ukraine made a decision that put an end to the years-long struggle to preserve the historical environment in the capital’s center. The court has definitively returned the land at 96-A Zhylianska Street to the territorial community of the city of Kyiv — within the Museum of Prominent Figures of Ukrainian Culture, dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka, Mykola Lysenko, Panas Saksahansky, and Mykhailo Starytsky,” the statement reads.

Conclusion of a Lengthy Legal Saga

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine noted that this decision marks the final chord of nearly two decades of legal saga associated with attempts to develop this valuable historical site in the very heart of the capital. The final court prohibition on the construction of a 16-story building near the Museum of Prominent Figures of Ukrainian Culture ensures the preservation of historical heritage for future generations.
