In the very heart of Kyiv, on Voznesenskyi Descent, a historic estate is under threat, as unique archaeological objects lie beneath it. This area, known for its underground caves from the times of Kyivan Rus, is being demolished by a development company for new construction. The land plot was acquired by the developer through dubious schemes, causing outrage among the public and experts in the field of cultural heritage preservation.
The Significance of the Underground Caves for Kyiv’s History
Located beneath the historic estate are caves that are over a thousand years old. They hold extraordinary historical, cultural, and tourist value, as they are part of the heritage of Kyivan Rus and are situated in the center of the capital. Experts emphasize that not only the caves themselves but also the land surrounding them are of particular value to the city and its residents.
“The caves of Kyivan Rus are over a thousand years old. They are a substantial, interesting, and tourist-attractive site. Moreover, they are located right in the city center. The historical and cultural value is represented not only by the caves but also by the territory and land around them. Today, these caves are once again under threat,” says Dmytro Perov.
Actions of the Developer and the Position of the City Authorities
According to experts, the company LLC “Capital Real Estate” gained control over the historical site by using a fictitious “building” of 108 square meters. If the city authorities and relevant structures do not intervene, a new residential complex may arise on the site of this unique monument, ultimately destroying the archaeological heritage. Specialists also note that the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration often acts in favor of the interests of developers, which only heightens concerns about the future of historical sites in Kyiv.
