On the occasion of Independence Day, the museum launched an exhibition titled “Treasures of Ukraine. Symbols of Statehood.” Visitors are presented with unique archaeological evidence of the development of the monetary system and statehood in Ukrainian lands.
Unique Artifacts from the Princely Era
Among the main exhibits are rare coins from the collections of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, as well as a sensational treasure discovered near the village of Horodnytsia in Zhytomyr Oblast in 2020. This treasure consists of 35 coins and two fragments of coins, dated to the reign of Volodymyr Sviatoslavich (972–1015), Sviatopolk the Accursed (1015–1019), and a prince named Petor (likely a Christian name for Sviatopolk). Coins depicting the Apostle Peter are of particular value.
Coins with Tridents – A Symbol of Ukrainian Statehood
Special attention at the exhibition is given to rare specimens of gold and silver coins minted during the time of Volodymyr Sviatoslavich. It was on these coins that the trident first appeared, which is today the state emblem of Ukraine.
“These numismatic artifacts hold great significance for our state, as the trident – the emblem of the state of Ukraine – first appears on them. The minting of our own coins is an attribute that confirms the beginnings of our statehood,” museum representatives note.
The exhibition provides an opportunity to see unique items that reflect the roots of Ukrainian national identity and statehood, emphasizing the continuity of Ukraine’s historical development.
