At the end of September, a unique historical monument — the remains of the foundation and walls of the gate church of the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery — is set to be presented to visitors in the Ukrainian capital.

Details of the Archaeological Work

Currently, employees of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, along with students, are actively working at the excavation site. The work of clearing and studying the remains is ongoing, with plans to open access to the monument for Kyiv residents and city guests by the end of September.

“Kyiv is gaining a new tourist attraction — the museumified foundations and remains of the walls of the gate church of the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery… We hope to show the monument to tourists on September 27-28,” the announcement states.

Findings During the Excavations

During the research, archaeologists stumbled upon an extremely interesting find — a footprint of a human foot on a brick that had been buried for over eight centuries. Experts suggest that this mark was left by someone from ancient Kyiv when the brick was still drying. Such artifacts help to better understand the history and daily life of the people of Kyivan Rus.

“Imagine, over 800 years ago, some vagabond, or vagabond woman — our distant ancestor — left us this message by running across the drying brick. They probably got a slap on the back of the head for it, but now we have a wonderful artifact,” the archaeologists shared about their discovery.

The unveiling of the museumified remains of the foundation and walls of the gate church will be an important event for the cultural life of Kyiv and will attract the attention of both locals and tourists interested in the city’s history.
