Call for China to Strengthen Its Role in the Peace Process

According to a statement from the European Commission’s press service, von der Leyen emphasized the

“importance of stability and predictability for the global economy”

. During the conversation, she also highlighted that the European Union remains steadfast in its support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The President noted that “any conditions for peace must be determined by Ukraine” and urged China to intensify its efforts to make a significant contribution to the peace process.

Trade Relations and Responsibility

In addition to discussing the issue of peace, von der Leyen drew attention to the new tariffs announced by the United States and stressed the importance of maintaining a strong, reformed trading system that should be “free, fair, and based on equal conditions”. She emphasized that China has a critical role in addressing issues related to potential trade rerouting in light of the new tariffs.

It is worth noting that earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the possibility of imposing new 50% tariffs on goods from China in response to Beijing’s decisions, which could significantly impact international trade.
