Expert Opinions on the First Murders at Maidan May Have Been Falsified — Lawyer

Деякі експертизи щодо вбивств майданівців були сфальшовані

The questions regarding the reliability of some expert opinions conducted in the cases of the first murders at Maidan remain open.

Oksana Myhalievych, a member of the “Advisory Group of Lawyers” and representative of the victims in the Maidan cases, spoke in an interview about the issues surrounding the investigation of specific episodes from 2014. In particular, she emphasized that the cases concerning the deaths of Serhiy Nihoyan, Roman Senyk, and Mykhailo Zhiznevskyi remain the most problematic.

Issues with the Investigation of the First Murders

According to Myhalievych, identifying the individuals involved in the first murders of Maidan activists has not yet been achieved, as the shooting was carried out with buckshot, and the circumstances of January 2014 were extremely complicated. Moreover, some of the expert opinions conducted at the initial stage of the investigation turned out to be falsified.

“There is essentially no determination of who did this because the shooting was done with buckshot. Additionally, in January, the situation was such that those people who might have been involved were likely trying to investigate. Some of the expert opinions conducted at that time were simply falsified. When the Department of Maidan Affairs took over these proceedings, they began to clarify and found that many pieces of evidence had already been lost by that point, and everything had to be redone. Even the first expert opinion regarding Nihoyan’s murder, as far as I remember, established that he was allegedly shot from behind — from the side of European Square, not from Hrushevskoho Street, where law enforcement officers were standing,” – noted Oksana Myhalievych.

Loss of Evidence and Duration of the Investigation

Myhalievych emphasized that the investigation into the circumstances of the murders at Maidan is still ongoing, and the statute of limitations in these cases is 15 years. At the same time, many important pieces of evidence have been lost, including video materials. In 2014, various units were involved in the investigation, which led to chaos and complicated the search for the truth.
