Russia threatens the Baltic countries due to defeats on the front in Ukraine

Росія погрожує країнам Балтії через невдачі на полі бою в Україні

The head of the European Union’s diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, sharply criticized the statements of the Russian Federation regarding the alleged use of the airspace of the Baltic countries by Ukraine. She emphasized that such accusations are unfounded, calling them “complete nonsense.”

Threats from Moscow and the reaction of Baltic leaders

Kaja Kallas highlighted that Moscow’s aggressive rhetoric is not aimed at demonstrating strength, but rather indicates its weakness due to failures on the battlefield in Ukraine. According to her, Russia is trying to intimidate the Baltic countries to reduce their support for Ukraine. At the same time, Kallas called for increased support for Ukraine and strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities.

“Moscow’s threats to the Baltic countries are not a sign of strength, but of weakness. Russia is failing on the battlefield in Ukraine and is trying to intimidate us into reducing our support for Ukraine,” the diplomat stated on her X page.

The situation around Latvia and statements from Russian intelligence

On May 19, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service issued threats against Latvia, stating that it is aware of the coordinates of decision-making centers on Latvian territory. The SVR’s message also emphasized that Latvia’s NATO membership does not guarantee protection from “just retribution.”

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže responded to these accusations, calling them “another lie from Russia.” She emphasized that Latvia does not provide its airspace for strikes against Russian territory.

Russian authorities have repeatedly claimed the use of the airspace of the Baltic countries for launching Ukrainian drones that allegedly attack targets on Russian territory. At the same time, the defense ministries of the Baltic countries do not confirm these accusations, emphasizing that instances of drones entering their territory are related to the electronic warfare conducted by Russia. According to them, Ukrainian drones sometimes lose orientation due to the influence of Russian electronic warfare systems.
