Ukraine’s Reaction to Hungary’s Actions
Sybiga emphasized that Ukraine considers Budapest’s actions to be manipulative and has no intention of tolerating such disrespect towards its military. According to the diplomat, Ukraine reserves the right to respond to this step with appropriate actions.
“We reject Hungary’s manipulations and will not tolerate such disrespect towards our military. Ukraine reserves the right to take appropriate measures in response,” Sybiga stated.
Reasons and Circumstances of Hungary’s Decision
The decision of the Hungarian authorities is linked to the death of a Ukrainian of Hungarian descent following his mobilization. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced a ban on the entry of three officials from Ukraine, while Deputy Minister Levente Magyar reported that the Ukrainian ambassador was summoned to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry due to the death of the Transcarpathian, Yosyp Shebeshteny. According to Magyar and local media, the man allegedly died due to being beaten by representatives of the Ukrainian Territorial Recruitment Center during forced mobilization.
At the same time, the command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine categorically denies these accusations. The Armed Forces explained that Shebeshteny was mobilized on legal grounds on June 14, 2025, after passing a medical commission. He was deemed fit for service, after which he began training at the military unit from June 15.
According to military sources, on June 18, Shebeshteny left the unit’s location without permission, and on June 24, he sought help from the Berehove Central District Hospital. Medical staff diagnosed him with acute stress reaction, after which he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital in Berehove.
A forensic medical examination, referenced by the Ground Forces, established that the cause of death on July 6, 2025, was pulmonary artery thrombosis, with no signs of violence or bodily harm found.
The Armed Forces emphasized that they remain open to a transparent investigation into the circumstances of this case.
Recently, the Hungarian authorities have repeatedly expressed criticism towards Ukraine and demonstrated cooperation with the Kremlin. In particular, in March, Hungarian Minister for European Affairs Janos Boka proposed suspending aid to Ukraine and creating a so-called “buffer zone” between Russia and the EU. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry firmly rejected such statements, emphasizing that Ukraine’s security is part of the security of all of Europe.
