The Ukrainian energy system next winter is under threat not only from power outages but also from a potential gas shortage and heating issues. This was warned by MP Inna Sovsun, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy.

Escalation of Russian Strikes on Gas Production
Inna Sovsun noted that for the first time in recent years, Russia is deliberately attacking gas production facilities in Ukraine. Such actions significantly complicate preparations for the heating season and create additional risks for stable gas supply.
“We may have issues with both gas and, accordingly, heating as well. This will not happen all at once, but the problem with the Russians starting to shell production is real. And it is more serious than we can imagine.”
According to the MP, despite having certain gas reserves in underground storage, the decline in domestic production due to systematic shelling poses a new threat that Ukraine has not faced during winter periods before.
Vulnerability of Gas Infrastructure
Sovsun emphasized that unlike the electricity sector, where it has been possible to partially secure key facilities, the gas production infrastructure remains virtually unprotected. This is especially true for the Kharkiv region, where the majority of production is concentrated and which is located close to the front line.
In recent weeks, Russian troops have significantly intensified shelling of Ukraine’s energy and gas infrastructure, which provides warmth to the population during the cold period.
Despite official denials from the Russian leadership regarding intentional strikes on civilian infrastructure, Ukrainian authorities and international organizations classify such actions as war crimes by Russia. It is emphasized that these attacks are targeted and lead to the destruction of energy and water supply facilities, as well as the deaths of civilians.
